about my work
ABOUT ME
Pregnancy, birth and motherhood always were topics that vastly interested me, long before I became a mother myself. I am the daughter of immigrants, a cultural antropologist-turned Ayurvedic practitioner and sociologist, born and raised in Amsterdam-a melting pot of diversity and different world views and expressions.
Interest in human traditions, behaviours and care literally came with my mothers milk. I studied pedagogy and worked in what now feels like a different life educational sector as a multidiciplinary school coördinator, manager and policy supervisor in the child care industry. After staying home with my eldest son for a couple of years i decided in early 2013 to become a doula. I had by chance attended births of former colleagues and supported friends during pregnancies, the passion had already been awoken but now i jumped in the deep end and decided to make it a profession. At the base of my passion for this work is my belief that women deserve good care, true bodily autonomy, not only in their daily lives but also when they are carrying new life within their bodies, the ownership over the birthing process and respect for their choices and wishes. Unfortunately this is not always default.
One of the reasons the doula profession exists as a profession, is that true human connection can make a difference is the labouring process, as with any hard times in life. Being supported and having someone hold space is what we truly need to get through the challenges we face. And this is something women have always done for eachother, but since moving away from communal living and towards an individualistic society we have lost this, but not the need for it.
And so as women we move towards our childbearing years with low expectations, little to no trust in our bodies, and fear often lies central to our believes around birth. By that time we have decades of built up feeling about our bodies not being good enough or faulty.
I have experienced this myself too and my own road towards motherhood and pregnancy was also filled with fear and self doubt.
This is why i am so passionate about working one-on-one with women on these topics. It is always multifactorial. I share my knowledge on the physiological process, the Dutch birth care system but maybe most importantly i empower them to find THEIR voice, gain confidence, trust in their bodies and autonomous decision making skills. It is all about you finding your own way, i might guide you through communication tips and tricks on how to be assertive and make informed decisions in a birth care system that is entirely new to you .
I work with midwives, doctors and other care providers to offer women the best care, but primarily i work for the client, and always have your back in regards to all the choices you make about Your birth.
I am a real "birth nerd" i read a lot scientific literature, cricial commentary from midwives i admire and books. I LOVE growth, thinking outside of the box, critical thinking- always chalenging my own beliefs. My learning process will never end and with each birth I attend i learn more and grow more in awe of women. I love women. I believe in women. In their power to chose, birth the way they want to give birth and find their inner power.
In my personal development i am very inspired by Eckhart Tolle, Brene Brown, Elizabeth Gilbert, Byron Katie, Esther Perel en Thich Nhat Hanh. But i don't follow guru's, as i wrote my biggest source of inspiration are women.
This fall I will be working 6 years as a birth doula. I’ve worked mostly on referral from former clients, my community and birth worker colleagues.
See, 8 years ago I made the conscious choice to be a stay at home mother, to this little boy you see in the picture. I had the privilege to be able to make this choice, albeit it wasn’t the easy road to take in many regards. This was my choice, if you know me a little already you might know i am all about that 😉 I’m a feminist at heart and believe we all should have the freedom to make our own decisions in life and to stand behind them.
I found my passion for birth work somewhere in that time too. I started studies to become a doula and in the middle of them I became pregnant with my second son. I prepared myself, made choices in regards to my care to facilitate the best circumstances for Me to feel safe to birth(this included a doula too!) and ended up having the most powerful birthing experience.
It was pretty normal and straightforward in hindsight.. but it meant the world to me. I will always have it as a source of power I carry with me.There certainly was a difference with my first. Which was of great influence of my start at motherhood.
It propelled my passion to help families even more. Women deserve better. To be respected, safe and supported whatever type birth they chose.
Life of a devoted birth worker is unpredictable and I have to leave my kids to go a birth at a drop of a hat and am away for anywhere from 4 to 24hrs or longer at a time. I couldn’t combine that fully with the commitment I had chosen to make to my children, when they were still small. Hence I only took on work when there was room for it in our lives. When my youngest son was a baby and toddler I gained experience where and when i could, attended schoolings and worked on broadening my professional knowledge to be able to assist women as best as I can offering custom care and support..I have met many inspiring women i was honored to assist at births, who have taught me so much as well as midwives& other birthworkers.
Together with my beloved doula Ellen Lennartz 1,5 hours after my fantastic birth. Filled with power, pride and oxytocin(so much love). One of the most powerful, amazing moments in my life.
